ELLI Administration
This
page contains information on the following administrative
aspects of using ELLIOnline
Equipment
Requirements
The
ideal situation for implementing ELLI online is to use a computer
laboratory or other facility that has sufficient computer
equipment to allow one terminal per student in the class,
plus one for the teacher. In this situation, students can
take the surveys simultaneously and the teacher can monitor
completions.
If
computers are limited and there is not one computer for each
student and the teacher, equipment will have to be scheduled
as described above. In either case, standard PC's that allow
access to the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW) are required.
Suitable browser software includes:
- Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5, 5.5, 6 (Not version 4)
- Mozilla
Firefox
- Netscape
6.x (Not versions 4.x)
- Opera
6

Profiling
Students
To simplify the survey process for students, it is necessary
for the school to pre-register certain information on school,
teachers and students. The process is quite straightforward
but it is important that the information requirements are correctly
followed. In summary these are as follows:
- School advises their ELLI reseller of the school's name, DFES
Number, LEA, school contact person and telephone number.
- School provides, from its information management system
(eg SIMS), the required student information in a form suitable
for uploading to the ELLI Online system. Full details are
available from this link
student data and format
- The information is checked and the reseller will register it to the ELLIonline system
- The reseller will send to the school:
- login ID's and passwords for teachers
- identifer codes for students
- Class teachers or a school information officer logs into
ELLI Online and prints out student login ID's and passwords.
- Students can do the ELLI profile at any suitable time,
simply by going to the ELLI
Online Login.
Note - all information is anonymous within our system.
Training
Teachers
Sometimes teachers want to be able to do the ELLI Profile themselves;
to familiarise themselves with the questionnaire and/or to see
their own learning profile ! A group of teachers can be registered
using the same process described above for students. The information
required is shown in this link
teacher data and format
Research
Participation Requirements
Schools usually want to assist in developing a national students'
ELLI profiles database. The anonymous ELLI identifier codes
we send to each school on registration can be used to provide
the ELLI Research team with related, anonymised data.
This
data could include the following :
- Ethnicity
- Religion
- Free meals entitled
- Attendance concern
- Behaviour concern
- SEN status
- KS NC attainments
- Teacher Assessments
- CATS Assessments.
Please contact our Research team for more information.
General
Requirements
The
ELLI profile is a tool that is designed to be used by learners
and for learners. To be used most effectively the ELLI profile
should be administered in a context where students have already
been introduced to the idea of learning power, and the possibility
of getting better at learning. It may be part of a process
of learner self assessment and of a focus within the classroom
on building learning power. The ELLI profiles can be used
at any stage of learning, and in any context, but it is best
if it is used in a professionally focused and strategic part
of a learning programme.
Teachers
need to impress on learners the positive effect that the ELLI
profile will have on their understanding of themselves as
learners and of what it is that makes an effective learner.
It is very important that the learner understands that what
they put in to the ELLI profile is what they will get out
of it – there are no right or wrong answers, learners should
be as honest as they can be.
The
ELLI profile has been designed to fit the reading level of
most learners from year 3 and above. However, in some instances
(e.g., English-limited students) the questions and instructions
may need to be read and explained to the students. It is quite
acceptable for the teacher to do this, and to highlight and
explain particular words which may be problematic. Experience
shows that the terms ‘intuition’, ‘hunches’ ‘criticises’ and
‘connections’ may require pre-emptive explanation. It is also
a good idea for older learners to help younger learners to
understand the questions.
Time
Requirements
To
obtain reliable results, the context of the ELLI profile should
be considered. For example, certain times of day and certain
times during the school year (e.g., the holiday season) may
be less conducive to ELLI profiling than other times. In addition,
if several teachers in a building are using the ELLI Profiles
for the first time, time for administration should be co-ordinated
across classrooms so that students do not have to take the
ELLI profile more than once.
The
ELLI profile can be completed in a normal class period within
about 30 minutes. Thus, planning for when to administer the
ELLI profiles should take into account the time of year, time
of day, and the amount of time needed within a particular
class period.
The
ELLI profile can be completed across two or three sessions
if time constraints require. Partially completed profiles
can be saved using the 'Save my answers' button at the bottom
of each profile form. On returning to the profile, the student
or teacher will be presented only with the unanswered questions.
The convenience of this facility should be weighed against
the possibility of profiles remaining uncompleted ! Teachers
will find that there is a mechanism to check the state of
completeness of ELLI profiles of each student registered in
their class.
Troubleshooting
- Unable
to see feedback images (eg spider charts)
Some
people have reported that images are missing from feedback
pages, especially the spider chart images. This problem
can occur with certain software firewall products. Personal
Firewall software (such as Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm
Pro or Norton Personal Firewall) can cause difficulties
in viewing graphics within ELLIOnline in certain circumstances.
It is usually simple to modify the 'settings' within the
Personal Firewall software so that the feedback graphics
are not 'blocked'. Some specific assistance for Norton
products* is available from the Symantec
website and from the ZoneLabs
website for ZoneAlarm products*.

you might undertake with these products
- Printing
problems with feedback charts
When
wishing to print several spider charts on a single page,
eg from the View Feedback > View all students page,
it is possible to print 10 spider charts per page by making
two small changes to the default Print Settings in your
browser software, as follows:
For
Internet Explorer -
Have
the page with the multiple spider charts showing, then
choose File > Print Preview from the menu bar of the
browser. In the Print Preview window, press the toolbar
button 'Page Setup' (looks like a cog on a sheet of paper)
to open a dialog box where you can modify Orientation
and Margins. Set Orientation to Landscape and Margins
to 10mm in each case. Click OK.
For
Mozilla Firefox -
Choose
File > Print Preview from the browser menu bar. From
here its very similar to the process for Internet Explorer.
Alternatively you may have a 'Landscape' button on the
toolbar and a 'Scale' box on the toolbar with a 'Shrink
to Fit' option. Use these to get the print preview looking
correct.
