Guide to ELLI online

This guide contains a summary of :

  • description of ELLI
  • how to use it
  • what to do with it
  • how to get help
  • a checklist of things that have to be done

What is ELLI?

ELLI stands for the Effective Lifelong Learning Inventory. It is designed to find out how learners perceive themselves in relation to seven dimensions of learning power. An ELLI profile will provide information about how a learner or a group of learners are doing on the seven dimensions of learning power:

  • Changing and Learning
  • Meaning Making
  • Curiosity
  • Creativity
  • Learning Relationships
  • Resilience
  • Strategic Awareness

This ELLI profile can be used diagnostically by the learner and by the teacher. It will help both focus on areas for development and change

ELLI is a questionnaire which is a learning experience in itself. It will challenge the learner to think about all sorts of aspects of learning, which they may or may not have been aware of. It is usually introduced to learners as part of a more general focus on getting better at learning.

Where to begin?

A. Preparation

  • Get informed about the objectives
How ? visit the website pages especially www.ellionline.co.uk/about.php
    and www.ellionline.co.uk/administration.php
  • Get yourself and your students registered
How ? ask your school administrator to provide the ELLI team with details of your students (they get this information from the SIMS system - or equivalent). Ask the ELLI team for your unique Login ID.
  • Check all your students are registered
How ? Login in to ELLI Online (at www.ellionline.co.uk/login.php) and from the menu goto 'Check Classes'

B. Implementation

  • First, plan a class session when your students will do the online survey.
This will probably mean booking a computer suite (you'll need one computer per student) for about 45 mins: 15 minutes explanation and 30 minutes for completing the survey. Note that some students are much quicker than others and that older students are quicker than younger ones, in general !
  • Then, before the above planned session, login yourself and print your students' unique Login ID's.
How ? From the menu choose 'Check Classes'. Print the page showing the logins (Each student login is a number and a password).
Note 1: You may wish to use scissors to cut the page into strips, one strip for each student.
Note 2: Students are identified only by initials and dob.
  • At the start of the planned session prepare your students.
    How ?
    • Explain the purpose
    • Provide each student with their Login ID
    • Tell the students to open an internet browser window (ideally Internet Explorer like IE5) and type into the address bar http://www.ellionline.co.uk
    • Students should select the link 'ELLI Online Login'
    • On the login page students enter their ID number and password and press the 'Log In' button.
    • Students then follow the instructions.

C. Classroom management tips

  • You can monitor student completions if you have access to a computer
How ? Once you are logged in with your ID and Password, from the menu choose 'Monitor'.
  • Support students with weaker literacy skills
How ? Ask some older students to read questions to the subject students or Read the questions aloud yourself or Plan for two sessions with half the class in each session
  • Check that when students have finished they press the 'Save my answers' button which is at the bottom of their survey page.
  • Students can see which radio button matches their response to each question/statement by allowing the mouse cursor to rest over each button. A small balloon appears on the screen with the meaning of the button. Try it here:

Now what?

Once students have completed the survey then automatic data analysis provides feedback. This feedback comprises several charts and tables covering both individual pupils and class groups.

Your educational consultant should also be able to provide further support. This can include support in analysing and interpreting data.

So what?

The feedback to the teacher is in the form of a profile that indicates a pattern of strengths and development areas for individual students and for whole groups of students. The feedback is in the form of a histogram, or graph, with mean scores and frequency counts for whole groups, and in percentage scores for individuals on each of the learning dimensions. Your educational consulatnt will help you to find suitable strategies as appropriate.

After a few months, if you wish, the surveys can be re-done to see how your strategies are working.

Getting help

If you need help with some aspect of classroom management your in school ELLI Mentor may be the best first 'port-of-call'. For other support call your Educational consultants helpdesk as appropriate. The numbers are listed under the contacts page.
